Master blender Lorena Vásquez commemorated Zacapa's five decades of rum-making by turning to the ceremonial traditions of pre-Columbian Guatemala, where cacao and chile held sacred significance in cultural gatherings.
The result is Zacapa 50th Anniversary Edition, a limited-release rum arriving in North American markets this month. For the brand founded in 1976 in Guatemala's highlands, the milestone represents a full-circle moment of cultural affirmation.
"I've spent decades working with Zacapa's aging process, and I remain fascinated by how far we can push it," Vásquez said. She experimented with specially toasted barrels infused with Guatemalan cacao and Cobán chile shells.
The spirit begins as virgin sugarcane syrup, fermented and distilled on Guatemala's Pacific coast before moving to the brand's aging facility at over 7,500 feet above sea level in the highlands. The Solera system passes the liquid through barrels previously used for American whiskeys, Sherry wines and Pedro Ximénez before introducing specially re-toasted American oak.
For the anniversary release, the final blend undergoes additional maturation in cacao and chile-infused barrels, followed by several months resting in oak tanks before bottling. Zacapa describes the result as balancing wood, caramel and aromatic spices, complemented by distinct cacao and Cobán chile notes with a long, persistent warmth of toasted and spiced character.
On the nose, the expression opens with vanilla and caramelized fruit. On the palate, wood and caramel provide structure while cacao and chile introduce complexity.
Vásquez, one of the rare women leading in an industry historically dominated by men, has spent over 40 years working with spirits. The packaging features a reimagined hand-woven petate band with a colorful design specific to the anniversary, continuing the visual conversation between the spirit and Guatemalan artisanal tradition.
Vásquez will travel to key U.S. markets for intimate tastings and conversations about Zacapa's craftsmanship. Select establishments will feature the GuateMai Tai, an exclusive cocktail pairing the anniversary edition with orange liqueur, almond syrup, fresh lime juice and aromatic bitters.
The Zacapa 50th Anniversary Edition is priced at $49.99. Limited availability begins October 15 in select markets in New York, California, Texas and Florida.
