Zacapa's 50th anniversary rum blends Guatemalan tradition with craft innovation

Master blender Lorena Vásquez looked to her homeland when creating a limited-edition rum to mark Zacapa's 50th anniversary, resulting in a spirit that blends ancestral Guatemalan tradition with contemporary craft innovation.

The Zacapa 50th Anniversary Edition launches across North American markets in October and represents a rare commitment by a heritage brand to honor its cultural roots while pushing creative boundaries, according to the company.

Vásquez, one of few women leading the traditionally male-dominated spirits craft, drew inspiration from ancient Guatemalan ceremonial practices—specifically the preparation of chocolate and chile-based ritual beverages—to develop a new aging methodology.

After blending rums aged between 8 and 24 years through Zacapa's signature solera system, the liquid undergoes final maturation in specially charred American white oak barrels treated with cacao and Coban chile pepper skins. The result delivers roasted cocoa and delicate spice notes woven through expected vanilla and caramel, with a distinctive warmth on the finish.

"I've spent decades studying Zacapa's aging process, and I remain fascinated by how far we can push it," Vásquez said in a statement.

The rum begins as pure sugarcane syrup, fermented and distilled on Guatemala's Pacific coast before transport to aging facilities above 2,300 meters elevation in Zacapa. The high-altitude environment creates conditions for sequential maturation through barrels previously used for American whiskey, sherry and Pedro Ximénez wine, interspersed with re-charred American oak.

The tasting profile includes vanilla and caramel-fruit character on the nose, with cocoa undertones. The palate balances woody, toffee and aromatic spice notes with chocolate and chile elements, finishing with roasted warmth and lingering spice.

Rather than simply adding limited-edition packaging to existing stock, Vásquez created a new product category within the Zacapa family, the company said. The bottle features anniversary-specific packaging with Zacapa's signature hand-woven petal bands redesigned with vibrant colorwork reflecting the brand's connection to Guatemalan craftsmanship.

Vásquez will tour major U.S. markets conducting tastings and conversations centered on Zacapa's craftsmanship and Guatemalan tradition. The brand is supporting the release through on-premise activations featuring the GuateMai Tai, a house cocktail pairing the anniversary expression with orange liqueur, orgeat, fresh lime juice and aromatic bitters.

Zacapa's existing portfolio includes No. 23, Edición Negra and XO expressions, widely available in specialty retailers, bars and restaurants globally.

The 50th Anniversary Edition is priced at $49.99 suggested retail and begins distribution Oct. 15 in select markets across New York, California, Texas and Florida.
