Bahamas Grid Company has appointed financial attorney Nikolai Sawyer and retail executive Debra Symonette to its Board of Directors as the utility completes its transition to full Bahamian management.

The appointments come after BGC severed ties with Island Grid Solutions' management and installed new executive leadership.

Sawyer brings two decades of legal experience specializing in corporate law, banking regulations and financial services. His background includes work in risk management and governance.

Symonette serves as head of Super Value Food Stores Limited and is a certified public accountant with more than 25 years of experience in financial leadership, accounting, auditing and corporate governance. She also serves as a director at Commonwealth Bank.

Anthony Ferguson, board chair, said the appointments strengthen BGC's governance structure as it operates independently for the first time.

"Independence is only as good as the people steering the ship," Ferguson said in a statement, emphasizing the importance of robust oversight.

CEO Dareo McKenzie said the company would work with the experienced board to deliver reliable power and system resilience.

The appointments reflect BGC's shift from foreign management to local control of the Bahamas' power infrastructure, making the company directly accountable to the islands it serves.
