Blue Shield of California and its parent company Ascendiun have appointed CJ Bhalla as chief financial officer, bringing two decades of healthcare finance experience to the role.
Bhalla begins work May 18, replacing interim CFO Kassie Maroney, who will transition to chief actuary responsibilities.
Bhalla most recently served as senior vice president and CFO at Kaiser Permanente, overseeing integrated care and coverage across Kaiser's California, Hawaii, Pacific Northwest and Washington state operations. That portfolio encompasses more than 10 million members and roughly $100 billion in annual revenue.
"This appointment signals the organizations' determination to inject fresh strategic thinking into their financial operations," Mike Stuart, Blue Shield's president and CEO, said in a statement. He emphasized that Bhalla's appointment comes as the organization works to make healthcare more affordable while improving health outcomes.
Paul Markovich, who heads Ascendiun, added that the move supports the goal of constructing a healthcare system that's sustainable and genuinely beneficial to communities.
Bhalla holds a master's degree from Virginia Tech and an undergraduate engineering degree from Punjab Engineering College in India. She also serves on the board of the Alameda County Community Food Bank.
Blue Shield operates as a nonprofit with six million members, more than 6,500 employees and roughly $27 billion in annual revenue. The Oakland-based insurer, which relocated from San Francisco where it was founded in 1939, has distributed more than $60 million through its foundation to support California communities in recent years.
