Credit Union, Boys & Girls Clubs team up on school supply drive

For the sixth consecutive year, North Island Credit Union has partnered with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego to distribute school supplies to local students.

This summer, the Back 2 School Drive distributed 170 backpacks and school supplies to children across the county's 22 Club sites. North Island members and employees donated backpacks during a branch collection drive, while the credit union purchased supplies to fill them. Elementary through high school students participating in Club programs will receive the packs before fall classes begin.

"Every student deserves to begin the school year feeling prepared, confident and supported," said North Island Credit Union President and CEO Steve O'Connell in a statement. "This annual drive is a meaningful way for our members and employees to help local families and give students the tools they need to succeed."

Michelle Malin, president and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego, said the initiative addresses a significant need in the community.

"Many of us take things like a new backpack and school supplies for granted. But these things are so important to our kids," she said. "The smiles on their faces when they select their new backpack is priceless."

The Boys & Girls Clubs organization operates 22 community-based sites across San Diego County, serving children ages 5 to 18 in safe, affordable environments.

North Island Credit Union, which operates as a division of California Credit Union, has $5.4 billion in assets and serves more than 200,000 members across the state. The credit union holds a Low Income Designation, meaning it actively develops products and services aimed at building financial stability in underserved communities. The organization was named a Forbes Best-In-State Credit Union in both 2024 and 2025.
