A U.S. Marshal was killed Monday afternoon while executing an arrest warrant in Alexandria, Louisiana.
The incident unfolded around 3 p.m. in the Rutland Road area when members of the U.S. Marshals Service Violent Offender Task Force, working alongside Rapides Parish Sheriff's detectives, moved in to apprehend a wanted fugitive. An officer-involved shooting occurred during the operation, according to the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office.
The suspect was wounded during the encounter and taken into custody following a lengthy standoff. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the shooting.
The FBI New Orleans Field Office has assumed lead investigative authority, with Louisiana State Police assisting and the sheriff's office conducting parallel inquiries into the shooting.
"The FBI is now leading the investigation into an assault on a federal officer," an FBI statement said. "Louisiana State Police is also investigating potential violations of state law. The subject, now under investigation, was taken into custody and there is no ongoing threat to the public."
FBI Director Kash Patel released a statement expressing condolences and pledging resources. The identity of the deceased deputy and details of the suspect's charges were not immediately disclosed.
