A parent with a special needs son is considering buying a condominium for him but worries the purchase could affect his government benefits.
The parent, who has full guardianship of his adult son, explored the option of purchasing a condo directly for his son's use. However, concerned about potential complications with means-tested benefits, the parent considered an alternative approach.
"Another option would be for me to purchase the condo myself and have him pay me rent," the parent said.
The dilemma highlights a common challenge facing parents and guardians of adults with special needs who receive federal benefits such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Medicaid. These programs typically have strict asset and income limits that can be jeopardized by inheritances or direct property ownership.
