Graham Platner's Senate campaign in Maine has unraveled under the weight of documented inconsistencies between his public statements and private conduct, along with a rape allegation he denies.
Between 2018 and 2019, while working as a bartender in Washington, D.C., Platner used Reddit to publicly attack former GOP Representative Duncan Hunter for infidelity. Platner called Hunter a "real piece of shit" and "garbage person" who "loved to brag about all the women he was fucking who weren't his wife." He also criticized Hunter's drinking as evidence of poor character.
Now the Democratic nominee for Senate—married since 2023—has confirmed he sent sexually explicit messages to multiple women during the early years of his marriage. The campaign says there were six recipients; Genevieve McDonald, his former political director, says his wife reported the number was around 12.
Platner also maintained an active Kik messaging account during this period with a shirtless profile photo, a choice he made while publicly positioning himself as morally upright on Reddit.
When McDonald disclosed these details, Platner's wife characterized her as a betrayer of trust who had spread "malicious gossip" about "the most private chapter of our lives." The response focused on the messenger rather than the conduct.
Platner now faces a rape allegation from a former girlfriend, which he denies. The allegation emerged alongside documentary evidence of the sexually explicit messages, the Kik account and the disparity between his public persona and private behavior.
Reporters uncovered the information through public records requests, social media research and interviews with people with direct knowledge of events—work that vetting should have caught earlier.
The Maine Democratic Party's vetting process proved insufficient. Multiple Democratic leaders have called for Platner to exit the race before a July 13 deadline to replace him. Major endorsements have been rescinded.
Platner remains in the race, reportedly using the party's desperation to remove him as leverage to influence his potential successor—a shift that suggests the focus has moved from addressing the issues to managing power dynamics.
The Republican response has selectively emphasized Platner's Nazi tattoo and inflammatory Reddit posts while giving less scrutiny to the rape allegation, the claim carrying the most serious legal and moral weight.
The episode reflects broader failures in vetting, due diligence and accountability at the state and local level. Voters in Maine face a choice between a damaged Democratic nominee and an incumbent Republican—a scenario that should not exist if the vetting process had functioned properly.
