Kiddie Academy Educational Child Care is launching a nationwide "Hero Play Day" program starting this month, offering free hands-on activities at franchises across the country designed to help children identify their real-life heroes.
The timing comes as children are increasingly bombarded with images of superheroes and celebrity culture. A survey of hundreds of families conducted by Kiddie Academy found that children overwhelmingly look to people around them as role models rather than fictional characters.
According to the survey, 71 percent of children name a parent as a hero. Teachers came in second at 40 percent, followed by siblings at 37 percent. Extended family members and friends rounded out the list at 33 and 31 percent respectively.
When asked what makes someone heroic, children's answers diverged sharply from popular superhero narratives. Bravery and strength tied with kindness at 37 percent each, while honesty landed at 31 percent. References to speed, invulnerability or other superhuman qualities were absent from the data.
"We wanted to create something that grounds heroism in real life," a Kiddie Academy representative said.
Participating locations will host Hero Play Day on select Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays between July and September. Activities are designed to encourage children to identify qualities they admire in people closest to them and to practice those qualities themselves.
Kiddie Academy operates more than 200 locations nationwide, giving Hero Play Day the potential to reach hundreds of neighborhoods. The events are free to attend.
The program offers parents and caregivers a structured opportunity to have conversations about values and role models with their children. Summer and early fall, when schools are out and families often scramble to fill time, represents an ideal window for community engagement.
