The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the New York Times, claiming the news organization improperly passed over a white male employee for promotion based on his race or sex.
The employee was not promoted to the position of deputy real estate editor, a role that was listed in January 2025. According to the EEOC complaint, the employee believed himself to be a significantly more qualified candidate for the position.
The lawsuit marks a new development amid broader scrutiny of the media during the Trump administration.
