President Donald Trump announced Monday that the U.S. Navy would "guide" stranded ships through the Strait of Hormuz, but shipping industry officials have questioned whether the plan will ensure safe passage through the critical waterway.
Trump said the operation, called "Project Freedom," would be a humanitarian gesture "on behalf of the United States, Middle Eastern Countries but, in particular, the Country of Iran," according to a post on his social media site Truth Social.
The announcement comes after reports that a warship was hit in the waterway. The world's shipping industry has raised concerns about vessel safety in the region.
