Baltimore's Mercy Medical Center earns top breast imaging accreditation

Mercy Medical Center's Tyanna O'Brien Center for Women's Imaging has achieved Comprehensive Breast Imaging Center accreditation from the American College of Radiology, recognizing facilities that maintain full accreditation in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound with ultrasound-guided biopsy capability, and breast MRI.

The designation, announced in October 2026, positions the center among a smaller subset of imaging facilities nationwide that meet these comprehensive benchmarks. It requires ongoing compliance and self-assessment across multiple imaging disciplines and quality assurance practices.

"This designation reflects the commitment of our entire breast imaging team to providing high-quality imaging and diagnostic services for the women we serve," said Dr. Deepa Masrani, the center's director.

The center, located at the Weinberg Center in downtown Baltimore, offers screening and diagnostic 3D mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI, breast biopsies and imaging-guided localization procedures. In 2024, Mercy introduced Genius 3D Mammography with 3DQuorum technology, which creates three-dimensional imaging to detect abnormalities that can be obscured by overlapping breast tissue on traditional two-dimensional mammograms. The center recently began offering Contrast Enhanced Digital Mammograms, designed to improve early breast cancer detection.

The accreditation provides access to the ACR's National Mammography Database, a benchmarking platform that allows centers to compare performance metrics, outcomes and processes against similar facilities. Participating centers receive performance reports every six months to identify targeted areas for practice refinement.

The designation remains valid only as long as required breast imaging services maintain their individual ACR accreditations, creating a continuous incentive for quality maintenance.

Mercy's center can be reached at 410-332-9102, with services located at 227 St. Paul Place in Baltimore.

Mercy Medical Center, a nonprofit Catholic health system founded in Baltimore in 1874, operates as both a community hospital and teaching institution. It has been recognized by U.S. News and World Report and Newsweek for orthopedic surgery, among other specialties.
