The University of Michigan plans to implement a pass-fail grading policy for incoming freshmen starting in 2027 in an effort to address the campus mental health crisis.
Under the new system, first-year students will receive only pass or fail grades on their transcripts, with detailed letter grades withheld. University officials say the policy is designed to reduce academic pressure and anxiety among new students.
However, some mental health professionals have raised concerns about the initiative.
