Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Cyrus Allen avoided a serious injury Saturday when he and defensive back Kaiir Elam collided during a special teams drill at the team's St. Joseph training facility.
Initial medical evaluation revealed only a shin bruise with no fracture or soft tissue tear, according to sources familiar with the assessment. Allen remained on the field briefly before being helped onto a cart by medical staff. Elam walked away without apparent injury.
The collision happened during a pooch punt period when both players, lined up as gunners, converged on the ball near the goal line.
"I hate to see somebody get hurt, especially on a special teams drill," said Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub, who noted that Allen had been making a strong impression before the incident. "We'll see how he is. He's really doing well on offense, and he's doing well for me too. He's at gunner and returner, and he's doing a real good job, putting himself in a good position to be a guy that's going to help us this year."
The fifth-round draft pick has stood out as one of Patrick Mahomes' primary targets during 11-on-11 drills, leading Kansas City receivers in catches during those competitive periods.
The injury scare was not an isolated incident Saturday. Xavier Worthy, another key receiver on the roster, went down during the same 11-on-11 period after catching a deep pass near the end zone and landing awkwardly on his shoulder. Worthy injured his right shoulder early last season in a collision with tight end Travis Kelce during a game against the Los Angeles Chargers and underwent an offseason procedure to address the problem.
Toub emphasized that the injuries underscore the inherent risks of football practice. He also noted that rookies are expected to contribute across multiple phases of the game until they establish themselves as key contributors on offense or defense.
"Anytime you have a rookie, everybody is on special teams until they aren't, until they establish themselves, whether it's a starter on offense or defense," Toub said.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been cleared for full participation in training camp activities. The next few days will determine how quickly Allen can return to full practice participation.
