KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — No. 1 Texas outlasted Tennessee in a defensive slugfest at Neyland Stadium on Saturday, escaping with a road victory that few expected when the week began.
With President Donald Trump watching from the stands, the Longhorns won in a game decided in the closing moments before more than 100,000 fans.
Texas' defense was relentless, recording 10 sacks and forcing Tennessee players off the field repeatedly. Defensive lineman Colin Simmons led the charge with five sacks, making life difficult for Tennessee freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon, who spent much of the afternoon scrambled from the pocket.
The Vols' offense struggled to establish rhythm against the Texas pass rush. Receivers Cam Coleman and Ryan Wingo found few clear opportunities to operate.
Arch Manning didn't dazzle statistically for Texas, completing 201 passing yards with no touchdowns. But the Texas quarterback managed the game competently, made throws when they counted and put his team in position to win when it mattered.
Texas led 10-3 at halftime.
"For us, we've got more of these to go," Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said after the game. "We have seven ranked opponents we still have yet to play. That's why I'm not going to apologize for how we beat a top-15 team on the road, when others don't even play them."
Texas has now collected two of the nation's most impressive wins this season, following their upset victory over Ohio State two weeks earlier.
For Tennessee, the loss stings deeper because of the personnel situation. The Vols are working with a freshman starting quarterback still learning the pace of SEC football, a vulnerability that Texas' defensive scheme exposed systematically.
Sarkisian has built a defense that can travel into one of the nation's most hostile environments and impose its will. For Texas, the immediate challenge comes against a slate of ranked opponents still ahead.
