The Los Angeles Orbit made its official debut Wednesday, introducing the city to its new professional women's volleyball franchise with a star-studded launch event at Intuit Dome in Inglewood.
The team, owned by venture capitalist Alexis Ohanian, actress Issa Rae and Savannah James, revealed its name, logo and brand identity to a crowd that included LOVB Commissioner Sandra Idehen, Olympic volleyball legend Misty May-Treanor and activist Malala Yousafzai.
The name Orbit represents the gravitational pull and energy that forms when people unite around something meaningful, according to team leadership. The branding centers on a singular concept: "Everything Revolves Around Her," which encompasses the professional athlete on the court, young girls watching from the stands, teammates in the locker room and every fan who supports the team.
"Los Angeles is a place where sports, culture, technology and entertainment come together," Ohanian said, "and that makes it an incredible place to build something new in women's sports. Los Angeles Orbit is the beginning of a movement."
Team President Ana Mendy said the organization is focused on placing women and girls at the center of the experience rather than on the sidelines.
"Everything we are building starts with her," Mendy said. "The athlete on the court, the girl watching from the stands, the teammate beside her and every fan who believes in this team."
The roster includes several marquee names: Carli Lloyd, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and World Cup champion; Kotoe Inoue; Annie Drews Schumacher; Madi Kingdon Rishel; and Kathryn Boden.
Yaamava' Resort & Casino at San Manuel signed on as the team's first Founding Partner, underwriting a program called Aces Up, which ties on-court performance to charitable giving. For every ace the Orbit records at home, Yaamava' will donate $1,000 to support the team's community initiatives across Los Angeles.
Los Angeles Orbit will play home games at Intuit Dome, which also hosts the NBA's Clippers. The team joins nine other LOVB franchises in what league officials describe as the first youth-to-professional volleyball ecosystem in the United States.
LOVB was founded in 2020 with a mission to reimagine the future of volleyball through what it calls a "community-up approach." The professional league launched its inaugural season in January 2025.
The organization is hosting a Free Fan Fest at Intuit Dome on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will feature opportunities to meet players, participate in volleyball activities and crafts, and customize team merchandise.
