Northwestern Mutual's Foundation announced a $75 million commitment toward childhood cancer research and treatment initiatives, marking one of the largest corporate pledges in the sector.
The Milwaukee-based insurance and financial services company revealed the investment on September 22, 2026. An initial $100,000 grant will go to Children's Wisconsin MACC Fund Center, located in Northwestern Mutual's hometown. The company signaled that additional hospital recipients will be named throughout 2027.
Childhood cancers receive roughly 4% of the nation's cancer research funding despite representing nearly 2% of all cancer diagnoses, according to the National Institutes of Health. That funding gap has historically constrained the pace of treatment innovation.
The commitment extends beyond direct research grants. Northwestern Mutual has embedded support for healthcare professionals who treat childhood cancer patients, addressing staffing shortages and burnout-related financial pressures in pediatric oncology.
A partnership with the Milwaukee Brewers generated an additional $500,000 for the initiative through fundraising efforts.
Northwestern Mutual has also structured its September financial planning campaigns to automatically direct a portion of new client interactions toward the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, a Philadelphia-based nonprofit that funds childhood cancer research and family support services. Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, founded in 2000 by Liz Scott in memory of her daughter Alexandra, has distributed more than $300 million to pediatric cancer research since its inception.
Children's Wisconsin MACC Fund Center operates as part of Children's Hospital of Wisconsin's oncology program and serves a five-state Midwestern region. The center coordinates pediatric cancer treatment protocols across multiple partner institutions and maintains one of the largest pediatric cancer patient registries in the country.
