A Bloomberg Businessweek investigation documents what occupational health experts have long suspected: the artificial stone countertop industry knew about the dangers posed by crystalline silica dust and proceeded anyway, leaving fabrication workers across America with a disease that one pulmonologist describes as worse than lung cancer.
The reporting traces a familiar pattern evident in asbestos litigation decades ago and repeated across industries that profit from hazardous materials. Manufacturers and distributors positioned artificial stone as a premium product while workers inhaled silica particles that eventually destroyed their lungs and kidneys.
Artificial stone slabs contain at least 90% nano-sized respirable crystalline silica, a known carcinogen. When fabricators cut, grind and polish these materials—often without adequate respiratory protection—they inhale particles so small they lodge deep in lung tissue, resulting in accelerated silicosis, a progressive, incurable disease.
Tyler Jordan, a former countertop fabricator, exemplifies the human cost. According to Bloomberg's reporting, Jordan developed artificial stone silicosis and kidney failure. He has endured dialysis, chemotherapy, a kidney transplant and multiple additional medical procedures.
Pulmonologist Jane Fazio, who has treated numerous workers with artificial stone silicosis, offered damning perspective to Bloomberg: "My patients with silicosis, I wish they only had lung cancer. Lung cancer can be cut out."
Researchers, occupational safety officials and public health agencies have understood the risks for years. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has stated that "the safest approach" is to use slabs containing little or no crystalline silica.
Yet the industry proceeded. Artificial stone became one of North America's most popular countertop materials because it offered manufacturers and distributors enormous profit margins.
The international record proves what could have been done differently. Australia implemented a nationwide ban on artificial stone fabrication in 2024. California regulators are currently moving toward similar restrictions.
The American industry's response has been litigation. Multiple defendants—Cambria, Caesarstone, Cosentino, Daltile, Arizona Tile, Architectural Surfaces Group, Surface Warehouse, Paragon Industries, Hyundai L&C and various distributors—now face expanding lawsuits from affected workers. Workers are seeking billions in damages.
Several questions remain unanswered. Did internal company communications reveal awareness of the silicosis risk before products reached market? Which distributors knowingly supplied dangerous materials to fabricators without adequate warnings? How many workers remain undiagnosed, still fabricating artificial stone without understanding the risk?
Public records requests, depositions and manufacturing documents may yet provide those answers. Regulatory agencies and law enforcement could demand production of corporate communications, safety studies and marketing materials.
