DYERSVILLE, Iowa — The Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Minnesota Twins 7-1 on Thursday in the Field of Dreams game, an annual Major League Baseball event held in a cornfield in northwestern Iowa and broadcast on Netflix.
Kyle Schwarber powered the Phillies' offense, hitting two home runs, including a solo shot in the first inning and a two-run homer in the fourth. Brandon Marsh added a two-run home run in the seventh.
The Twins' only run came on a solo homer by Luke Keaschall in the second inning.
Phillies starter Aaron Nola struck out nine batters across five innings while allowing one run. The Philadelphia bullpen held Minnesota scoreless the rest of the way.
The game featured an opening ceremony with 26 Hall of Famers emerging from the cornfield, including Steve Carlton and Mike Schmidt for Philadelphia, and Joe Mauer, Bert Blyleven and Jim Kaat for Minnesota. Others included Billy Wagner, Tony Perez, Scott Rolen, Paul Molitor, Jim Thome, Cal Ripken Jr., Andre Dawson, Rollie Fingers and Fergie Jenkins, along with more recent inductees CC Sabathia, Trevor Hoffman, Ivan Rodriguez, Larry Walker, Fred McGriff, Adrian Beltre, Andruw Jones and Jeff Kent.
The Field of Dreams game began in 2021 as a one-time event at the fictional cornfield made famous by the 1989 film. It has since become an anticipated annual tradition that draws fans from across the country to the small Iowa town of about 4,000 people.
Local businesses and hotels benefit from the influx of visitors during game day. The field, constructed specifically for the game, has become a destination venue.
