A bench-clearing brawl erupted Tuesday night at Fenway Park when Boston Red Sox catcher Willson Contreras charged the mound after being struck out by Nationals pitcher Cade Cavalli, who told him to "sit down."
Contreras broke free from players attempting to restrain him and threw his batting helmet at Cavalli during the fourth-inning altercation. Umpires ejected Contreras along with Red Sox outfielder Nate Eaton, interim manager Chad Tracy and Nationals pitcher Miles Mikolas.
The incident marked Contreras' second ejection in as many days. On Monday, he was ejected in the second inning after making a sarcastic gesture toward an umpire over a check-swing call.
Contreras, 34, had also broken down emotionally Monday while discussing earthquakes that struck Venezuela, his home country. He hit a home run before learning of the natural disaster affecting his native land.
Major League Baseball typically issues suspensions when players use equipment as a weapon, raising the prospect that Contreras could face additional discipline beyond the ejection.
The Red Sox will proceed without Contreras for at least several games pending any league decision.
