Onyx Impact Launches Aisha – Better AI, Built for Us

Onyx Impact, a nonprofit research and digital innovation hub, has launched Aisha, an AI assistant designed to address bias in artificial intelligence by centering Black sources, history and lived experience as foundational design principles.

The move comes as documented cases of AI bias have drawn increased scrutiny. ChatGPT has been shown to recommend harsher sentences, including capital punishment, when a defendant's name suggested they were Black. Image generators produce CEOs with pale skin and criminals with dark skin, reflecting biases absorbed from training data. A study of four million job applications found AI hiring systems systematically filtered out Black applicants across major industries.

"Existing AI answers questions. Aisha delivers understanding," said Esosa Osa, founder and CEO of Onyx Impact.

Unlike most AI systems that treat information retrieval as a technical problem, Aisha incorporates context and recognizes how Black communities communicate, what they value and how they navigate information within specific historical, cultural and social contexts, according to Onyx Impact.

When analyzing news stories, Aisha platforms Black-led sources and provides historical grounding to help users cut through misinformation, the organization said.

Onyx Impact designed Aisha with different priorities than major AI systems, prioritizing bias reduction, privacy and safety over profit maximization and rapid scaling. The organization described the approach as applying "cultural intelligence" — recognizing nuance, understanding context and engaging with the language, history and lived experience that shape conversations in Black communities.

Aisha was originally launched as a web-based chatbot in 2025 and has evolved into a fully immersive app experience available at Aisha.ai, the App Store and Google Play.

Onyx Impact positions the launch as part of a broader reckoning about AI bias. The organization argues that AI systems ignoring the context and lived experience of significant populations are not just unfair but technically inferior, missing important information and reproducing historical patterns rather than moving beyond them.

"As artificial intelligence continues reshaping employment, healthcare, criminal justice and countless other domains, the question of whose interests these systems serve becomes increasingly urgent," Onyx Impact said in a statement.
