A SIM swap scam allowed hackers to steal a Florida woman's phone number and drain her bank account in minutes.
In a SIM swap scam, attackers trick wireless carriers into transferring a victim's phone number to a device they control. Once they gain access to the phone number, hackers can reset passwords and access financial accounts, email and other sensitive information.
Security experts recommend several steps to protect yourself from SIM swap scams: Enable two-factor authentication that doesn't rely on text messages, use authenticator apps instead of SMS-based codes, add a PIN to your wireless account, and monitor your accounts regularly for suspicious activity.
